Talent: You know it when you (can’t) see it
One of the books I am reading for this course is “Re-imagine!” by Tom Peters, and on Page 254, he lists a set of traits that he believes are the “real deal.” I will list them for you here in this blog, but as a question to everyone- can any of you name a “real deal” talented man/woman that exeplifies many of these traits?
1. Displays Passion
2. Inspires others.
3. Loves Pressure
4. Craves Action
5. Know how to finish the job.
6. Thrives on WOW
7. Exhibits curiosity.
8. Embodies “wierd.”
9. Exudes a sense of fun.
10. Thinks at a high level
11. “Gets” Talent.
An obvious answer to the question posed above is Steve Jobs. There’s no doubt that he displays passion, after all, he was the founder of Apple! He definately thrives on the WOW factor because he basically changed the world of mobile media. He exhibits curiosity because well, without his curious nature- I would venture to guess that Apple’s financial situation would continue to be on the slump before he joined his company again. Lastly, he definately embodies “wierd.” For starters, the jeans and black turtleneck, WHY??

Anamika, since I just read about Richard Branson in The Medici Effect (great book!), I’ll say he’s DEFINITELY the REAL DEAL. Richard Branson, British business magnate and founder of the Virgin brand, is a risk taker, both in business and in life. He started Virgin Atlantic Airways without a bit of knowledge about or experience in the airline industry. He loves dangerous daredevil stunts and has made several attempts at breaking the Guinness World Record in sailing and world travel. He has a bawdy sense of humor, is completely humble and unassuming, and loves to have fun. He doesn’t take life or business too seriously, which is why he’s been so successful and has lived so fully.
