Touch Screen

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

I have been wanting to buy a good digital camera for quite a while now and my recent trip to San Francisco has made me realize that a good digital camera is a must. I have had an eye on Sony T300 which has standard features like 10 Megapixel, 5x zoom, face detection and so on. It also has ISCN technology where the camera selects the optimal setting for best photo results. What I really liked about the camera is that its got a 3.5 inch touch screen. The camera has no buttons at all which I find to be quite cool. I am big fan of the touch screen technology and I like the fact that this technology is being used in more or less all devices. Apple came out with the iphone and iphone has taken mobile phones to a whole new level. We see touch screen technology in mp3 players and cars. Microsoft put this technology in furniture and came out with Microsoft Surface table which is truly amazing.  All this makes me wonder where we are headed and I feel that few years down the line we will have the option of having the touch screen technology in more or less everything. Sony T300IphoneMicrosoft Surface

Apple and iPod

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I know we have a lot of Apple/Mac-lovers in our class, and I absolutely love my iPods (regular and shuffle), but I have noticed a couple of “flaws” lately. First, I have been traveling since I left for San Francisco, and I have noticed that I’m carrying around two different chargers for my regular iPod and my iPod shuffle. Since I already have several chargers for my cell phone, laptop, camera, etc., for me it would be incredibily useful to use one charger for both iPods. Also, talking about “thinking outside the box”, how amazing would it be to have only one charging device for all your electronic equipment…? Especially for business travelers i think it would be a great (but complicated) topic to research.

Secondly, after having visited the NikeTown in SF, I keep thinking about buying the Nike+iPod device. However, I won’t get it, because that would require me to purchase a third iPod (the nano). I’m not sure if Apple made the device only for the nano on purpose or not, but it would seem to me this would keep people from purchasing it. And maybe that would be Apple’s goal: To make people, who might already have the regular iPod, to buy the iPod nano. I actually feel the same way about the iPhone/AT&T deal, but again Apple probably has good business reasons for that decision as well.

I think these two points go along well with our repeated discussions of continuously improving a product/service/design, and never being done with it. I believe that even the most successful products or services can be improved over time, but only if you continue to use design thinking and attitude to figure out what the consumer really wants

5 Things iPhone 2.0 Must Have

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Enlarging the keyboard.  Faster net access. Inside GPS chip. Richer multimedia tools. Unlock to other service providers. These are the 5 tips many have made about improving the current iPhone. I do not own one, I played on one a few times and some of these suggestions I can agree with.  The keyboard could stand to be larger specially for those with larger hands. Unlocking to other providrs then just AT&T. It was stated that at least one in five have been unlocked for other phone services. However, maybe most importantly and relevant to our class is the GPS chip inside. The article discusses the great invention called a map. The iPhone has a great mapping system but lacks the ability to find the location of friends.  Because of the new updates to the phone in January users are able to use Wi-Fi technology to triangulate their position.  It is necessary to keep up with competition at the current moment Sprint/Nextel has the abilities to perform these actions.  It was also stated that the new iPhone should contain some of these features such as the new GPS chip.

I think this would be most beneficial to them because if they are truly trying to be an everything in one phone this is pertinent to their dominating the market.  The cell phone industry is always changig and evolving. Having bought a phone 6 months ago might mean it does not hold half the options has the same but updated phone of today. The iPhone does have things to work on and it is their best interest to take some of these suggestions into mind when creating their new phone for the ultimate users.

Trying to Capture That iPhone Flair

Monday, February 18th, 2008

The ability to access the web at any time is constantly growing.  People need on the go constant connection to get what they need when they need it. Whether it be a local business or information of a particular band. Having the ready to access 24/7 world at your finger tips is becoming increasingly necessary.  Apple is advanced in their iPhone because they have brought together well the hardware and software of of the mobile device and internet usage. Now since the release of the iPhone many other phone companies have been trying to copy their not only sleek and appealing style, but also most importantly what is inside that counts.

From the iPhone commercials the ease of usage is one of the key factors which turns on even those with the least technological abilities.  Now other phones are trying to cash in on what counts as well.  Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson are all creating iPhone look and feel alike.  I feel that they could be very successful with this  method because of these phones are available on a variety of service provider no switching of  services is necessary which will lead to success for these poser companies.

AT&T at the ready with iPhone Updates

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

As stated in an article from WIRED.COM, AT&T revealed plans on Wednesday to continue 3G (Third Gen. Mobile Device Network) build out in an additional 80 U.S. cities and 350 new markets. That expansion will continue throughout the year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2008. It should also make that 3-G iPhone everyone is expecting this summer potentially more attractive to some consumers.

iPhone users have complianed that current 3-G chipsets are “power hogs.” Today’s 3-G devices have battery lives that span only 2 to 3 hours, compared to the iPhone’s average 8 hours. (Note that with the 1.1.3 update, some iPhone users stated that they have noticed significant decreases in battery life after Apple supposedly made changes to the phone mangement systems. Apple knows that they must have a battery life with a min. of 5 hours in order to keep up with competition.Devices like Nokia’s N95 are hoovering close the the 6 hour battery mark while browsing on a 3-G network Squeezing in a 3-G chipset from the likes of Qualcomm into the iPhone while keeping the device as thin (or thinner) is likely no small feat. Nevertheless, a more robust 3-G network is good for the iPhone and many other devices .
